Cardiff Council Upgrades Waste & Recycling Manager System With Help From Ikôn.
The Challenge:
Cardiff Council wanted to improve quality and quantity of recyclable materials collected by educating households on related health & safety issues
It required a solution that enabled refuse collectors to track waste & recycling and provide educational information to residents relating to issues
The Solution:
Cardiff Council implemented a fully automated bin barcoding system from Waste & Recycling Solutions Ltd. (WRS), a partner of Psion Teklogix
Workers are equipped with Psion Teklogix Ikôns, rugged PDAs configured with built-in barcode scanner, colour camera, and phone
Ikôns link directly with Cardiff Council’s WRMS via GPRS, which enables automated task scheduling for home visits, inspections, and more
Refuse collectors record issues on Ikôn and information is sent back to central database where educational letters are printed and sent to offenders
The WRMS stores all issues, actions, tasks, and letters with date and time so necessary future actions, such as issuing penalty notices, can be taken
The Benefits:
Decrease in health & safety issues related to overloading and side waste
Improved health & safety for residents and collection operators
Better able to meet recycling targets since issues and repeat offenders can be monitored
Reduced operational costs due to overall increase in efficiency

Natural Task Support
Providing mobile workers with computing devices that assist them in the field creates great opportunities to improve productivity. To be most effective, mobile computing devices must not only perform the tasks they are required to do, but also be designed to meet the needs, abilities, and limitations of workers and their work environments. This means ergonomics, a scientific discipline that concerns itself with finding the perfect fit between people and their work to improve employee job satisfaction, is a crucial element when designing effective mobile computing devices.

RUGGED vs. COMMERCIAL
In order to objectively assess the business case for deploying handheld devices, it is critical that the organization understands the ramifications of their choice of device. As with any buying decision, consumers perform a cost benefit analysis, weighing options versus the benefits relative to the initial cost of the unit. Cost should be measured over its expected lifespan from purchase to disposal rather than a point in time. Over time, device performance can seriously affect the overall performance of the business and the return on investment (ROI).
Ruggedness
Providing mobile workers with computing devices that help them do their job in the field creates great opportunities to improve organizational efficiency and productivity. When deploying into mobile environments, ruggedness is a key consideration - not only must devices be able to support the application, they must also withstand the physical challenges inherent to potentially tough environments.

Psion EP10
| Psion EP10 Product Highlights
|
SHANGHAI, LONDON and NEW YORK – 8 DECEMBER 2010. As part of its new product development strategy, rooted in its Omnii product platform, Psion (LSE: PON.L) today announced its latest rugged PDA device – the ingenious Psion EP10 handheld computer.
This announcement takes place as part of an exclusive gathering of national dignitaries, key company executives and business partners in Shanghai, China.
“We’re excited to launch our latest product in China, the world’s second largest economy, where mobile computers help run many of the most demanding logistical operations and where manufacturing, exports, transport and shipping dominate,” said John Conoley, Chief Executive Officer, Psion.
The new Psion EP10 is a small and durable PDA device that offers high performance, extensive features, communications capability and durability. It represents a major addition to the company’s portfolio of mobile business devices and offers all the functionality of high-end, full-size devices in a smaller form factor and at an affordable price.
When the Psion EP10 hits the market in Q2 2011, it will extend the reach and appeal of Psion to a new category of buyer: business users who employ consumer-grade smartphones and devices for commercial and industrial activities to deploy business applications into the field.
Built on Omnii
The Psion EP10 also appeals to businesses that require a more durable handheld computer that can cope with challenging weather and environmental conditions. Prior to the launch of the Psion EP10, these customers had to deploy consumer-level hardware that led to downtime, poor productivity, and increased long-term costs.
With its extensive feature set, the Psion EP10 is built from the same core technology that is used in the rest of the Omnii family, which was introduced by the company in October 2010. It is well suited to companies in retail, transportation, professional services, field services and field sales. The device also offers the latest in wireless communications, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and 3G cellular radio of both CDMA EVDO Rev A and GSM HSPA+.

Strategic investments paying dividends
“Launching the Omnii platform earlier this year is enabling us to deliver high quality products across a variety of categories to market faster. Instead of the normal two years, we reduced the development cycle for the Psion EP10 by more than a third and delivered a range of additional features. The arrival of the Psion EP10 also shows that we’re keeping the commitments we made earlier this year – to deliver incremental opportunities to our customers, resellers and developer partners,” added Conoley.
Another step on the road to open source mobility
The Psion EP10 is another device conceived out of the company’s open source mobility (OSM) philosophy. OSM consists of three key elements:
- Modular Product Platform designed to bring products with the latest technologies to market faster.
- Embraces the principles of Open Innovation through Ingenuityworking.com to further co-create ideas and solutions with customers and partners.
- Customisation for unique and specialised applications, through software development kits, hardware developer kits, and the EP10 expansion module.
The Psion EP10 will be commercially available by April 2011 and will be distributed in all major US, European and Asian territories. Pricing to be announced shortly.

Psion Omnii XT10
London and Toronto, 28 Sept 2010 – Psion (LSE: PON.L), the global provider of mobile computing solutions, today unveiled another strategic landmark for the company, with the launch of Psion Omnii™, a sophisticated, highly modular mobile computing platform. The new Omnii platform will give Psion, its resellers and developer partners the opportunity to co-create the widest range of adaptable solutions in the industry. Psion’s Omnii platform coupled with the open, online community at www.ingenuityworking.com, delivers an entirely new way of developing mobile products.
With Psion’s Open Source Mobility (OSM) business model at its heart, Psion’s Omnii platform delivers a new, adaptable and rugged handheld computing family of devices. The platform combines more than 20 years of industry expertise in modular architecture and design. During its development phase, the Omnii platform has been subjected to over 120,000 hours of product testing, which included extensive beta testing with business partners and customers.
OSM is Psion’s innovative business model that combines three core elements:
- A sophisticated, highly modular mobile computing platform
- An open innovation approach to collaboration and development
- Customisable products, solutions and services
Psion’s Omnii platform tackles technology obsolescence
To achieve the longest possible lifecycle, companies have previously had to buy complex, expensive and over-featured devices to try and keep pace with changing technology and business needs. This also limited their ability to quickly adapt to new market opportunities or to adopt breakthrough technologies.
Psion’s Omnii platform fundamentally changes this scenario. It is designed to deliver the best lifetime TCO from the outset. By being almost completely re-configurable in the field, devices built on the Psion Omnii platform can be adapted for new technologies or even be re-purposed as customer needs change. The upgradeable and interchangeable modules are not only developed by Psion, but also by an expanding network of more than 200 developer partners around the world, connected together via Psion’s open, online community at IngenuityWorking.com.
John Conoley, CEO, Psion, said: “The development and launch of Psion’s new Omnii platform is the next major strategic milestone for the company. We’ve tested, adapted and evolved the platform based on direct feedback from the people who will use and develop on it. This modular design approach enables customisation at far greater levels than anyone in this industry has achieved before. The savings that can be generated through lower TCO and longer product life are compelling. The modular approach is also great for Psion, giving the company unrivalled flexibility, cost control and continuity as well as significant market differentiation.”
Introducing the Psion Omnii XT10
The first device to be created from the new Omnii platform is the Omnii XT10, which launches today. The Omnii XT10 is an ultra rugged, modular handheld computer, targeted at demanding users, such as ports, airports, supply chain and logistics operations.
Psion’s Omnii XT10 comes with an IP65 and a 2.0m drop rating and due to the inclusion of the Texas Instruments OMAP3 processor performs up to two times faster than the competition on industry benchmarks. The superscalar architecture delivers parallel ARM instructions for better performance and better efficiency, at lower MHz. The Psion Omnii XT10 features extended battery life with over twice the capacity of comparable products and offers a battery health grade feature that warns when the battery is nearing the end of its lifecycle and allows users to get maximum value from the hardware.
“Our new Omnii platform is the most technically advanced enterprise mobile computing environment we’ve developed so far. It builds on the success of our previous products, such as the Workabout family, and extends our commitment to developing highly adaptive, ingenious and open products that meet the widest possible array of mobile computing demands,” said Mike Doyle, Chief Technology Officer, Psion. “With Psion’s Omnii XT10, we’re starting a new and exciting journey to take advantage of an evolving abundance of niche applications for rugged mobile devices.”
