Within the span of a decade, the smartphone, followed by
smart communications, has become so pervasive in the modern social fabric that
it has become common wisdom that the traditional workspace needs a digital
overhaul. Trends driven by the cloud and social communities, which gave rise to
working styles that are increasingly agile and flexible, have even led to the
ideation of the bleisure concept.
As its name suggests (the portmanteau of business and
leisure), the bleisure concept recognises the diminishing boundaries between
work and personal inclinations, inspiring designers to create spaces like
serendipity corners and chance-encounter corridors, aimed at sparking novel
ideas. Modern workspaces are poised to be melting pots of creativity by
enhancing interaction and collaboration.
A successful digital workplace is an organic entity
involving regular planning and evaluation, to ensure the organisation truly
benefits from Unified Communications.
Digital communications technologies have emerged to be the
centrepiece of the modern workplace infrastructure, sporting the banner of
enabling Unified Communications at work. Thinking with both feet on the ground,
the ultimate utility of Unified Communications really is to improve the bottom
line of businesses. How does digitisation contribute? By removing unnecessary
barriers of the collaboration process to the largest extent, thereby driving
revenue generation and streamlining various business operations.
International dealings used to be an exclusive domain of
sizeable multinationals. However, following successful globalisation, small and
medium enterprises have sprung to the forefront and have in fact become a
dominant force in the global business scene. The world has literally become the
oyster for all businesses big and small. No doubt this is an exhilarating
prospect for any enterprising salesperson, it also implies that a successful
salesperson is global in outlook yet local in servicing, paying extra attention
to the clients’ cultural backgrounds.
The world used to be at our fingertips, but we now take it
for granted that the world is just a touch or swipe away now. We are spoilt for
choice when it comes to communication hardware and software, but the real
question is about implementing the right communications tools for each individual
situation.
‘I truly believe and have reiterated that a great digital
workspace for an organisation is not about the technology, but how unified the
people are with their internal communication.’ Jit Reddy, Director Unified
Communications APAC.
I truly believe and have reiterated that a great digital
workspace for an organisation is not about the technology, but how unified the
people are with their internal communication. Admittedly, the first step to
Unified Communications still depends on the technology, although it has to
focus on establishing a communications platform which is easy to use and
intuitive. The next step revolves around the concept of seamless
communications, and I do not mean a platform which synchronises various
devices. Rather, I refer to end-to-end seamless communications within an
organisation.
To illustrate within our context, any successful sales
effort is premised on seamless communication between the sales force and the
support team. Excellent communications technologies are up for grabs for all
business organisations, so, the focus should be on how the sales force and
support team could synergistically communicate through the platform.
As such, it is imperative for the organisation’s technology
provider to understand the specific business needs of the organisation before
jumping the gun to offer various solutions. To facilitate the implementation of
relevant solutions, I believe in the long-term engagement between the
technology provider and the organisation. With business needs changing rapidly,
the technology provider’s presence would prove to be instrumental to help the
organisation adjust their communications platform accordingly.
Through prudent implementation, an organisation can realistically expect better responses and resource allotment to challenges, technological requirements, employee adoption etc. In short, Unified Communications will prove to be a worthwhile investment, when properly designed and rolled out with continual care.
